Step 1 of 8

What is your U.S. tax status?

What you receive

A filing map, not a phone call

Your filing requirement, year by year

Each year from 2026 back through the six most recent closed years, tested against that year's published threshold for your filing status and age. Required, not required, or not enough information — never a guess dressed as an answer.

The forms and disclosures that follow

Form 1040 and its schedules where a return is indicated, the FBAR on its own separate track, Form 8938, and the specialist forms your answers point to — each marked likely, possible or not indicated, with the rule that put it there.

Your catch-up route, if you need one

Ordinary delinquent filing, the delinquent FBAR procedures, or a possible Streamlined Foreign Offshore review. Never a claim that you qualify for any of them: eligibility turns on a certification only you can make.

Deadlines and a prioritized plan

The dates that actually apply to you, including the automatic two-month extension for taxpayers abroad, with the weekend and holiday rolls computed rather than approximated. Then what to do, in the order that matters.

Your $100 back, as credit

Creditable in full against an eligible Atamatax preparation service within 14 days. The report prints the expiry date and the net price, and the credit is applied server-side rather than being a code you have to remember.

Read a complete worked example — the whole report for a composite case, produced by the same engine as yours.

How it works

Three steps, about ten minutes

  1. 1

    Answer the questionnaire

Start by describing your situation in your own words if you prefer. We read it and propose answers, showing you the sentence each one came from — you confirm or correct every single one before it counts. Then a guided questionnaire fills the gaps, one section at a time, saving as you go.

  2. 2

    Pay $100

One payment, no subscription. Creditable in full against eligible preparation work within 14 days if the report points you toward any.

  3. 3

    Read your filing map

On screen and through a private link you can return to. Every conclusion names the rule behind it and the official source that rule rests on, so you or an accountant can check the reasoning line by line.

Who it is for

People who need an answer before they need a preparer

  • U.S. citizens living outside the United States
  • Dual citizens who have never engaged with U.S. tax
  • Green-card holders, current and former
  • Accidental Americans who found out recently
  • First-time filers working out where to start
  • Anyone uncertain which past years actually mattered

Scope

What this does not include

It does not prepare or file a tax return, an FBAR or an information return. It does not compute what you owe. It does not decide whether any failure to file was willful, and it does not determine that you qualify for the Streamlined procedures — that certification is yours to make, on Form 14653, and no automated assessment can make it for you. It is not a legal opinion.

What it is: a personalized filing-obligation assessment based on the answers you provide, with the reasoning and the sources shown.

Method

Built on the published rules, not on a model

Every filing conclusion comes from a versioned rule with a tax year, a condition and an official source. The thresholds are transcribed from the IRS Revenue Procedure that set them, one per year, so a report issued today about 2022 still states the 2022 figure. Nothing about whether you must file is decided by a language model.

Questions people ask first

Is this the same as filing my tax return?

No. This is an assessment of what you appear to need to file — by year, by form and by deadline. It is not tax return preparation, and Atamatax does not submit anything to the IRS or FinCEN as part of it. If the report points you toward preparation work, it names the service that covers it and applies your fee as a credit.

What if I have never filed before?

That is one of the most common reasons people buy this. Never having filed is not evidence that anything was ever due: the assessment evaluates each year on its own income against that year's published threshold, so a year you earned nothing comes back as no return required rather than as a gap to catch up on.

What if I discover I do not need to file?

That is a legitimate result and the report says so plainly. There is no upsell attached to it — where nothing is identified, the report tells you what would change that and stops. You will have paid $100 to stop worrying about it, which is the point.

Can the fee be applied to tax preparation?

Yes. The full $100 is creditable against an eligible Atamatax preparation service bought within 14 calendar days. Your report shows the exact expiry date and the net price after the credit. The credit is single-use, tied to your diagnostic, and is applied server-side at checkout.

Do I need to upload documents or provide my SSN?

No. There is no document upload in this product and no field anywhere for a Social Security number, an ITIN, a passport number, a bank account number or a login. The questionnaire asks whether you have a taxpayer identification number, because the catch-up rules turn on that, but never asks for the number itself.

When will I receive the result?

Most reports are produced the moment you finish the questionnaire. Where the assessment reaches something that should not be issued automatically — an open question, or a route that turns on a judgement — it is held for a check by Atamatax before release, which usually adds a working day. The report always tells you which of those happened.

What if my situation is too complex for an automated result?

The free pre-check catches the situations this product should not price: an open IRS examination or investigation, or a case where you tell us you knowingly chose not to report. Those are routed to a person and no payment is taken. Where a case is complex but still assessable, you get the full report and it names the specialist forms rather than pretending they are not there.
